In the Dustpan
Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.~Luke 12:7 ESV
As I swept my bathroom floor, I noticed several random strands of hair in the dustpan, and I was reminded of this verse.
How I See Me
God has an incredible measure of love for us. For that matter, I do not know the total number of hairs on my head or any of the heads of my dearest loved ones. When one strand falls off mine, I don’t even notice. Granted, I would like to keep every hair on my head, but it is not so important that I number them. Beyond that, those I love would think I was obsessive if I counted every hair they had and kept track of each fallen strand. Yet to God, we are so precious that He watchfully cares about even this minute detail of our lives. I don’t always ponder much about this aspect of His love and character, but it is tremendous.
How God Sees Me
God never loses count and is watchfully aware of the finest detail, easily overlooked or minimized as unimportant or trivial. To Him, every detail matters. Yes, even my hair somehow matters to God because it connects to me, and I am His. I simply marvel at this reality that the creator of the universe, who holds all things together and has billions of people on the face of the earth, is attentive to my hair count. He somehow deeply observes every part of my life and cares about every hair strand.
Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.~Isaiah 40:28 ESV
Sometimes, I think overlooking the depth of God’s love is easy. It’s easy for me to walk through each day encapsulated in my little corner of the world. I get overwhelmed by my tasks and responsibilities and feel ordinary. Rarely have I stepped back to ponder that God loves me and knows the slightest change in the number of hairs on my head. His love humbles and awes me—the love He has demonstrated time and time again in unimaginable detail and kindness. I have yet to revel in the many facets of who He is.
I will recount the steadfast love of the Lord, the praises of the Lord, according to all that the Lord has granted us, and the great goodness to the house of Israel that he has granted them according to his compassion, according to the abundance of his steadfast love.~Isaiah 63:7 ESV
Do you, like me, also feel ordinary and need to be reminded of God’s rich, extravagantly detailed observance and love for you as His precious creation? As you ponder the wealth of His love for you, know God cups you in His hands.
God, it is so easy for me to go through each day and lose perspective of how richly You love. Thank You for the beautiful reminder that You care about even the smallest details of who I am. Help me keep Your love at the forefront of my mind each day. In this way, I can be a beautiful reflection of that love to others around me. Amen.
