Influencers
So the other disciples were telling him, “We’ve seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “If I don’t see the mark of the nails in his hands, put my finger into the mark of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will never believe.”
~John 20:25 CSB
Influencers flood my social media feeds. How can I discern what is real? They tell me what to eat, wear, think, do, feel, like, dislike, and everything else imaginable. Everyone has an opinion, and they all believe they are correct. With the advent of AI (artificial intelligence), recognizing truth is now almost impossible. Or is it? There is one place where I can find absolute truth—God. His Word is truth I can trust. He is the ultimate Influencer.
WHO
I am the Lord, and there is no other; there is no God but me.
~Isaiah 45:5a CSB
Who is the image on my screen? Why should I believe what they say? What are their credentials? The message is scripted for optimal effect. Their image is often enhanced to look perfect.
My ultimate Influencer, however, is real. God has given me a witness to His validity—His word and His Spirit. I can see and touch His creation all around me. He is the only one I need to follow.
WHAT
So we do not focus on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
~2 Corinthians 4:18 CSB
What are the influencers peddling? A new wonder diet. The perfect exercise. Cute clothes. The diets are usually a revamping of the same old plans. One influencer says to do their exercise for success, while the next disagrees and offers another program. The clothes are displayed on people with perfect bodies. It’s all about perception. How long will it last?
God offers eternity. His focus is on forever. His grace will get me through the present and prepare me for the future. He leads me to think on things above.
WHY
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works which God prepared ahead of time for us to do.
~Ephesians 2:10 CSB
Why do the influencers do what they do? To generate likes, follows, recognition, and possibly revenue. The majority use media to influence my thinking for their own benefit.
God created us for good works. Not for ourselves, but for others. He teaches that when we serve others, we serve Him. Not only do the served reap a benefit, but the server does too. He has made us to bless others.
HOW
For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:16 CSB
Influencers sway our thoughts through media, AI, information, pictures, stories, and other tools to shape our decisions. They often do not care about their audience. Instead, they use self-motivated propaganda.
God freely offers eternal life to anyone who believes through the sacrifice of His Son. It’s a simple post: Believe and Be Saved. He is the answer.
Choose wisely whom you will follow in this world of influencers.
Lord, help me to shut out the chaos of the digital world and focus on You, the one great Influencer. Lead me to truth and protect my heart in this world of make-believe. Amen.
