Worried about Worry
A bold fundraiser for our mission team was fast approaching, and I doubted the outcome. What once seemed like a great idea now felt questionable. Would enough people come? Would the sale generate enough money to help with our plane tickets? Had I thought out the details and covered my steps? I worried about worry.
Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.
~1 Peter 5:7 NLT
The Anxiety
I looked for ways to distract myself from anxiety and considered a fishing pole. Envisioning a fly fisherman casting the perfect line, I thought about the Lord doing a catch-and-release. He can take care of anything I throw to Him.
Cast your cares on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.
~Psalm 55:22 NIV
The Burden
I contemplated a heavy backpack shouldering the weight of rocks. The burden was too cumbersome for me, but not for God. I didn’t have to carry it anymore.
If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers—most of which are never even seen—don’t you think he’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? What I’m trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God’s giving. People who don’t know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.
~Matthew 6:31-33 MSG
The Wonder
God knew the size of the bill we faced to get to Africa. And He cared about the way we were working to accomplish our goal. I could let go of being responsible for The Mega Fantastic Outlandish Garage Sale because God was in charge. He could handle the apprehensions. He would be attentive to the details. My job was to surrender and work hard with His strength. And, you know what? We raised $10,000 for our Uganda Team. Our heavenly Father turned the worry into wonder!
Think of some ways to cast your cares upon God. Don’t be worried about worry.
Father, thank You for helping me to release my clutch on anxiety. Your care for me is complete with compassion and kindness. In Jesus’ name, amen.
