Chosen to Build God’s Kingdom
You also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
~1 Peter 2:5 NIV
We are chosen to build God’s Kingdom.
Stones for Our Use
Stones have many uses. We skip them across lakes and use them to build castles, fortresses, and homes. I enjoy scouring the beach for flawless stones hidden among the misshapen ones. They’re not easy to find. Sometimes, I have to dig deep to uncover them beneath the muck. But discovering that one perfect stone that stands out from the rest always makes me smile.
What’s interesting about stones is their diversity. They come in various sizes, shapes, and conditions. Over time, the pounding of waves against larger rocks helps to shape them. Likewise, our experiences shape who we are. Each of us comes to God with imperfections, struggles, and sins. Yet, God chooses us to build His kingdom.
From the opening pages of Genesis to the concluding verses of Revelation, stones appear as symbols woven into the biblical narrative. They serve not only to memorialize significant events but also to reflect the divine story unfolding across the ages.
- David used a stone to topple Goliath.
- Joshua, Jacob, and Samuel erected stone memorials.
- The Ten Commandments were etched in stone.
- And a stone was rolled away at the tomb of our Savior.
Stones for God’s Use
Since stones have played an integral role throughout biblical history, it’s clear that God is still writing His story through them. Each of us has a distinct role in building His spiritual house.
For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything.
~Hebrews 3:4 NIV
I compare life to a quarry, where God finds us, cleanses us, and smooths our rough edges. Challenging relationships teach us to respond in ways that honor God. Although we may wince when we have to hold our tongues, these experiences are necessary for our spiritual growth. They mold us into the people God created us to be.
I’m thankful that God doesn’t rescue us from a life of sin only to leave us unchanged. Over time, He transforms our character and loosens sin’s hold on our lives. Although the shaping may bring discomfort, even pain, it is always for our ultimate good. The good news is we don’t have to do it in our own strength. God empowers us as we surrender to Him.
One day, God’s work in us will be complete, and the one who refined us will see a beautiful stone made fit for His kingdom.
Reflect on whether you are yielding to God’s shaping, or whether He must apply extra pressure to your heart.
Heavenly Father, sometimes I feel unfit to be used by You. Remind me that You will complete the good work You’ve begun and transform me as I surrender to You. In Jesus’s name, amen.
