Skipping Rocks
Since you are my rock and my fortress, for the sake of your name lead and guide me.
~Psalm 31:3 NIV
Skillful Rock Skipping
Most of us have skipped rocks. It can take a while to get the hang of it, but once the rock effortlessly skims the waters with a few skips, we’re hooked.
After that, it can be difficult to pass up a body of water surrounded by smooth stones without trying to skip one across the surface. How many times can we skip it? Once? Twice? Or will it sink?
I’m not sure why skipping rocks is so appealing. Perhaps because when a rock skips easily multiple times, we feel as if we’ve got serious skipping skills. But when it sinks immediately, we must try again.
God in Creation
I’ve wasted time performing this mindless act that may have been better spent in a more productive way. But nature is soul-satisfying in its own way. We need these types of activities because they ground us in the world. God made the rock, the water, and us.
We need interaction with God’s creation. Personally, I can’t help but think of Jesus when I think of a rock.
He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.
~Deuteronomy 32:4 NIV
Spiritual Rock Skipping
Spiritually, Christians also skip rocks by sharing the Word. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we’re guided to pick up a perfect spiritual stone in our hands, roll it around, grip it just right, and throw it across the water of the world. This may be in the form of something God has laid on our hearts to write or say.
Maybe the rock will skip wonderfully across the water and amaze us. Or we might feel discouraged because it sank. It didn’t do the task we expected when we flung it out. The good news is, we get to try again. Either way, it’s truly in God’s hands. He is in control of how things go when we skip a rock across the water. We get to participate, and in this, we are blessed.
How can you skip the Rock that is Jesus as you go through life?
Heavenly Father, thank You for giving me opportunities to share Jesus with the world. Thank You that He is my Rock. In Jesus’ name, amen.
