Carry What God Asks
Appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, all its furnishings, and everything in it. They are to transport the tabernacle and all its articles, take care of it, and camp around it.
~Numbers 1:50 CSB
Although it may be difficult, we must God carry what God asks us to carry.
Some books of the Bible are harder for me to read than others, like Numbers. I struggle to grasp the importance of recording the number of people in each clan and what God tasked them to carry. I’m sure God had a reason, but it eludes me. But once, I determined to read one chapter a day and asked God to show me what I needed to see. Instead of skimming, I dug in.
At the Lord’s command, they were registered under the direction of Moses, each one according to his work and transportation duty, and his assignment was as the Lord commanded Moses.
~Numbers 4:49 CSB
One thing that stood out to me was the specificity and detail of God’s plan. Everyone had a job and a purpose. And it was recorded. God assigned each clan a specific part of the tabernacle to carry. Everything from the ark of the testimony to the tent pegs. Each load carried significance in God’s eyes.
But I wondered about the heart attitude of the load bearers. Did some consider their load more precious? Did others resent the plainness of their task? Or did they work with a thankful heart and not consider it just a job?
You are to assign by name the items that they are responsible to carry.
~Numbers 4:32b CSB
Their assignments were even by name—not a general plan but precise and determined. Reading about God’s meticulous plan helped me realize God has also called me to carry something. What I carry may not seem as important to me as what someone else carries, but each part of God’s plan is necessary.
More importantly, God Himself has determined what I am to tote. Who am I to argue with His plan or assignment? I am thankful to be called to carry what God asks in service and worship of Him. My response should be one of obedience.
Discover what God wants you to pick up and shoulder. Then, by faith, carry it.
Thank You, Father, for including me in Your plan. Help me to respond in obedience to Your calling. Forgive me whenever I don’t fully appreciate my load. Nothing is too small to carry. Amen.
