The Truth of Our Identity
We can try to live up to Scripture’s promises, but only when we know the truth of our identity will we enjoy our position as beloved receivers instead of strivers.
Every child needs a father. Earthly fathers protect and provide. By their actions and words, they ground us in a sense of identity. Treasured or insignificant. Blessed or lacking in what we need. Bold or insecure. Labels may be spoken clearly or inferred by how we’re treated. Therefore, when we know we’ve been adopted by God, we can rest in His Fatherly love, provision, and protection.
You have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.”
~Romans 8:15 NLT
Satan’s Lie
As an orphan-minded person, I struggled with the fear of rejection. The enemy had used circumstances in my life to make his lie that I was on my own seem true. While the Scriptures said something differently about me, it took my heart some time to receive the truth of my adoption, belonging, and security.
Security also comes from knowing we’ll never be the object of God’s wrath or condemnation. Our position is not dependent on our own righteous acts but on the righteousness of Christ.
God’s Truth
As a representative of the human race, Jesus lived a perfect life before God. Then He received the punishment we deserved for our sin by dying as an innocent, sacrificial lamb. Because God’s righteous wrath against our sin was poured out on Jesus, it will never be placed on us.
For God has not given you a spirit of fear, but of power and love and a sound mind.
~2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV
The enemy of our souls wants to keep us from living out this great gospel of freedom and joy. He has no right to harm us, but if we don’t stand up to him, his lies and accusations about us can keep us from enjoying our relationship with our Father.
Make sure you are living in Abba’s love.
Father, thank You for sending Jesus to the cross for me. I accept the pardon He secured for my sins and my new life in the Spirit. I receive my adoption and want to live my life walking intimately with You as my Abba. In Jesus’ name, amen.
