When I Grow Up
Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.
~James 1:17 NASB2020
“What do you want to be when you grow up?” I asked my grandkids.
We were in a cabin in the mountains, and their parents were at dinner while I babysat. To keep them entertained and fill the time, I decided to play the question game. Even though their ages ranged from five to twelve, they eagerly played along. The answers varied from astronaut to artist. In fact, the five-year-old finally decided she wanted to paint in space and be an astronaut artist.
Later, I reflected on my answer to the question. What did I want to be when I grew up? I know I’m grown, but sometimes the process feels as if I’m still a kid. Have I become what I dreamed of from so many years ago? More importantly, am I becoming what God wanted?
The one who had received the five talents immediately went and did business with them, and earned five more talents. In the same way, the one who had received the two talents earned two more. But he who received the one talent went away and dug a hole in the ground, and hid his master’s money.
~Matthew 25:16-18 NASB2020
In the parable of the talents, the master gave each of his servants talents and expected them to use and increase their talents. Likewise, what has God given to me that I may use it to impact the kingdom of God? Have I held onto the gift and hidden it out of fear of losing it or of not succeeding? Do I recognize the gift as God-given and treat it accordingly? I must discern the gift. If God gives it, He will equip me to use it.
As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the multifaceted grace of God.
~1 Peter 4:10 NASB2020
The master expected the servants to be good stewards. How have I used what I have been gifted? Am I exercising the gift for my own glory? How might my gift be used to encourage others? I must utilize the gift in steadfast belief of God’s purpose.
For this reason, I remind you to kindle afresh the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.
~2 Timothy 1:6 NASB2020
The third servant buried his talent and did nothing with it. Have I ignored my gift at times? Buried it for a season instead of steadfastly exercising it? Maybe I need to unearth my gift, dust it off, and apply it to its God-given purpose. Perhaps I need to let it see the light so that it can grow and accomplish God’s aim.
Reflecting on and discerning my lifelong desire to write as my gift brings new urgency. Defining my gift, seeking to use it for others, and always kindling it afresh put me on the path of obedience. I’m not responsible for the outcome, but I am responsible for the employment.
Think on your God-given gift and how you might use it better for the kingdom.
Dear Lord, thank You for the gifts given. May I always recognize and utilize them for Your glory.
