Proof I Am Loved
When the dog bites, when the bee stings, when I’m feeling sad, I need more than to think about my favorite things to make me feel less sad—I need proof I am loved. (Sorry, Maria. I still love that the hills are alive, though, with the sound of music.)
During the shiny, bright holiday marked by red and green, the blues tend to hit me extra hard, as they do for many other people. Depression is no joke, whether chemical, hormonal, or emotional. I need to remember to look at the tangible love of God, Jesus Christ, which is the reason why we celebrate Christmas.
Nativity scenes are a good reminder. I have a ceramic set that my grandmother hand-painted over forty years ago. Every year, I set up the scene on my entryway table, an antique that formerly belonged to my grandmother. I hold the precious baby Jesus in my hand, a tiny body broken and resurrected several times with glue. The metaphor is not lost on me. God works in mysterious ways, for sure.
Reading the story of Christ’s birth in Luke 2 reassures me of God’s love for me and chases away all painful feelings.
She [Mary] gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them. That night, there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terrified, but the angel reassured them.
But here comes my favorite part.
“Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David!” Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others—the armies of heaven—praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.”
~Luke 2:7-11, 13-14 NLT
A Savior is born—for me and everyone else. Knowing this brings on a massive dose of gratitude, which in turn fills my heart. While meditating on these verses, this well-known verse came to mind. It further proves God’s love for us.
For God so [greatly] loved and dearly prized the world, that He [even] gave His [One and] only begotten Son, so that whoever believes and trusts in Him [as Savior] shall not perish, but have eternal life.
~John 3:16 AMP
Proof of God’s love for me and everyone on earth. He loves me and I love Him. Praise You, Lord!
If you need proof of God’s love for you, store His words in your heart and mind whenever the blues strike.
Loving Heavenly Father, I praise You and thank You for loving me and saving me. Thank You for giving me Your Word and Your Holy Spirit to teach me about the depths of Your love continually. Therefore, please give me a fresh filling to overflow onto others. In Jesus’ mighty name, amen.
