Nothing Means No Thing
Nothing means no thing.
“What if I fail my science test?” one of my daughters asked.
“I will still love you,” I said.
“What if I get in a fight at school?”
“I will still love you.”
My daughters enjoyed a made-up game we played on car rides or during downtimes at home. The idea of the game was not to promote misbehavior but to affirm their mother’s unending love and to drive the point home: Nothing you do or say will ever separate us.
“What if I want to quit volleyball?”
“I will still love you.”
Shocked, my oldest pressed on. “Even after you bought the expensive team shoes?”
“Yep, I’d still love you.”
This was a pivotal time in their lives. They were in late elementary to early middle school when we started the game, which is a time when all the affirmations are vital. The constant message of that game was clear: nothing would ever separate them from my love.
Does that hint toward a similar idea we’ve heard before?
And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
~Romans 8:38-39 NLT
God loves us despite our blunders, slips, and less-than-stellar spiritual times. And He loved us so much that no thing will ever change that.
So, let’s play a round with our wonderings.
Will God still love you if you betray or deny him? Yes.
Will He still love you if you discourage others with your words or actions? Yes.
Will He still love you if . . .? Yes.
No matter the question, the answer will always be yes. He loves us.
For God has said, “I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.”
~Hebrews 13:5b NLT
We could play this game endlessly with the same, predictable answer. Yes, God loves us and that will never change. He will never leave or let you down.
“Give thanks to the God of heaven. His faithful love endures forever” (Psalm 136:26 NLT).
Why might it be difficult for you to grasp the depth and continual nature of God’s love?
Dear Father, help me to understand how much you love me with a never-ending love. Help me to show an example of Your love as I love those around me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
