Hurricane Warning
Perfect Weather
For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and they did not understand until the flood came and took them all away; so will the coming of the Son of Man be.
~Matthew 24:38-39 NASB
From the weather that day, I would have never imagined a hurricane warning.
The sun bathed the yard in brilliance. Squirrels scampered through the tops of the oak trees shading my porch. Bird song chorused through the air. A lone, puffy cloud sailed through the blue sky. All seemed right and good. Relaxing, I sighed, sipped my coffee, and planned my day.
The cloudless sky made a lie of the forecasted hurricane. I shrugged and promptly ignored the warning. My to-do list crowded out the message. Laundry and dishes claimed my attention. Mentally, I filled out my grocery list as I swept. Later, glancing outside, I noticed the lone cloud now had several buddies. And the tree limbs swayed in the wind. The first inkling of danger crossed my mind.
Preparations Needed
So you, too, when you see these things happening, recognize that He is near, right at the door.
~Mark 13:29 NASB
As the day wore on, the sky darkened. Tree limbs sparred with one another in the gusts of wind. Birds and squirrels had disappeared. Concern crept into my mind. Was the hurricane really coming? I flitted from window to window, searching for a different outlook. Should I have collected water in the tub? Looked for my emergency candles and matches? Made sure that I had plenty of supplies on hand? Having not heeded the warning, I had spent my day consumed with my own agenda, disregarding the signs. Now, I wasn’t ready for what was coming. If only I had believed and prepared.
Spiritual Preparation
And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. But when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.
~Luke 21:27-28 NASB
Jesus is coming. Opportunities to share Him surround us. Hopefully, when we look around in eternity, we will see people we have talked with about Jesus. Let’s pray our lives and our mouths only confess Christ and His saving grace.
How can you feel that urgency to share the message of Jesus’ saving grace with those in your sphere of influence?
Lord God, soften my heart. Make me responsive to the urgency to share about Christ so my friends will receive Your Son’s saving grace. Please shield me from the distractions of this world that tend to paralyze my obedience. Help me to see the unsaved through Your eyes of love. In Christ’s name, amen.
