God’s Stars
God-Winks
Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament. And those who turn many to righteousness like the stars forever and ever.
~Daniel 12:3 NKJV
I love watching God’s stars at eventide. A twinkling star is a God-wink to me.
God created them, and His Word states, we will shine like stars in the universe.
God’s Stars–Classifications Worth Noting
According to the Atlas of the Universe, stars are classified according to their surface temperature and brightness. The classes are O, B, A, F, G, K, and M. The O stars are the hottest, and the M stars are the coolest; they are numerous but dim. O stars are rare but bright. Our sun’s classification is somewhere in the middle.
For fun, let’s represent Christians as the stars “O” and “M”, for either obedience or mediocre.
The Obedient Christian
“Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who delights greatly in His commandments” (Psalm 112:1 NKJV).
~Psalm 112:1 NKJV
Since O is the hottest and most rare, let’s classify this star as the Christian who is Obedient. Complete obedience is rare. Oh, to always be obedient to the Master, a bright star, leading many to righteousness. Those who achieve this state of being are blessed. We should lean into obedience.
The Mediocre Christian
The more numerous yet weaker stars are M for Mediocre. None of us wants to be mediocre with low quality, value, ability, or performance. Notice the word mediocre begins with the word “me.” A mediocre believer focuses on self, not caring to put in the effort it takes to shine brightly. At times when I’ve chosen mediocrity instead of obedience, my joy diminishes. The Bible states God despises mediocrity: “So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth” (Revelation 3:16 NKJV).
Turning from Mediocracy
I want to be obedient and shine, giving my all to God. One day, I learned how important these qualities are to our Christian life. I felt urged by God to call a friend to see how she was doing. I did not want to speak with her because she often complained and recited the same stories.
“I’ll send an email, God.” I convinced myself this was obedience.
You need to call her, the Spirit echoed in my head.
I ignored the Spirit, and as my finger hovered over the send button, I heard in my spirit again God’s voice, “Call her!”
“But Lord, I don’t want to hear her recite the same stories over and over.”
I did not hit send. Instead, I waited.
A few days passed.
Call her now! The Spirit’s impression on my heart thundered throughout my soul. “But Lord . . .”
The Spirit interrupted, I did not ask you to heal her, that is My job. Just listen as I listen to you. I wanted to cry. Had I blatantly disobeyed God, trying to justify my half-hearted attempt via the unsent email? Yes. I remembered my pastor’s words, “Partial obedience is disobedience.”
I called. My friend recited the same stories, but my attitude had changed. I listened to her like I knew the Lord would listen to me. Instead of focusing on my desires, I listened to the Spirit as my friend spoke and thought of ways to minister to her. The Spirit gave me soothing words to say and the boldness to help my friend obtain a Christian counselor.
Complete obedience to the Lord not only brought peace to my heart but also helped me support my friend in getting the assistance she so dearly needed.
Let’s praise God for His patience with us. He knows there are times we are an “M” star working on “O” status through prayer, Bible study, and obeying the Spirits’ prompting.
When we observe the evening sky, let’s be reminded to shine like an “O” star.
Are you an “O” star, shining obediently for God and turning away from mediocracy?
Father God, help me die to self and live in the power of the Holy Spirit so I can shine for You in this dark world, sharing Christ’s love with those You send my way. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
