Getting Ready
The Lord also said to Moses, “Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow and have them wash their garments; and have them ready for the third day, for on the third day the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people.
~Exodus 19:10-11 NASB 2020
Whenever getting ready for an outing, I follow a routine.
I shower, brush my teeth, put on deodorant and lotion, get dressed, fix my hair and makeup, and put on my shoes and jewelry. The routine rarely varies, possibly to prevent me from missing a step. I’m ruled by lists, whether mental or physical. I put a lot of thought into getting ready for my outing. Not only the physical readying but also my mental preparation. I think about where and when I’m going, who I am meeting, and what we are doing. So much effort in preparing for a small excursion. Before I leave the house, I have already invested more than thirty minutes of my time trying to offer my best.
But do I put that much effort into getting ready to meet God? Maybe I do on the days I head to church. What about my everyday meeting time with Him in His Word and prayer? Do I seek cleansing through confession? How about spending time adoring Him and rehearsing His blessings? Or do I go straight to petitions and concerns? How much effort on my part does time with God deserve?
When the Lord told Moses to prepare the people to meet Him, He told them they had to be set apart and wash their garments to hear Him speak. The people understood that God was holy. They could only come to Him through the high priest and hear from Him through the prophets and priests.
Today, we come to Him through the blood of our great High Priest, Jesus Christ. But do we take that privilege for granted? I can be anywhere, pray to Him, and know He hears me. I don’t have to wait for a priest. But I don’t want this instant access to God to make me less reverent. Instead, I should humble myself and show gratitude. I should pray and confess before my daily worship time with God.
Therefore let’s approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace for help at the time of our need.
~Hebrews 4:16 NASB 2020
As you prepare to meet with God daily, remember how holy He is and how blessed you are to be His beloved child. Never take the blood of Christ for granted. Let getting ready be on your mind.
Examine the ways that you begin your quiet time with the Lord.
Dear God, thank You for allowing me access to Your holy presence through Christ my Lord. Help me not to take Your grace for granted. May I always come to You in reverence and awe. Amen.
