Getting Grounded
I will walk about in freedom, for I have sought out your precepts.
~Psalm 119:45 NIV
Getting grounded was a form of discipline for some of us when we were young. And it worked quite well.
When Parents Grounded
We broke a rule, defied our parents, or did something wrong for this to happen. Being grounded was not fun because it involved losing freedom. We weren’t allowed to leave the house or yard for a while. Our parents decided the length of time or style of grounding, but it usually stunk. The inability to roam may have caused us to read, draw, or write while we sulked in our rooms about the unfairness of it all. But the discipline was for our good, and, hopefully, the grounding taught us a lesson.
Adults also need to be grounded. Yet, this is not punishment and can only come from a relationship with Jesus. In our surrender, we find freedom. In grounding, we discover liberation. The weight of life’s worries and burdens evaporates, and we find relief. We read and study because we desire to learn more about Christ, not because we are bored. We write because we want friends and family (and honestly, complete strangers) to know what He’s done for us.
But now He has reconciled you by His physical body through His death, to present you holy, faultless, and blameless before Him – if indeed you remain grounded and steadfast in the faith and are not shifted away from the hope of the gospel that you heard. This gospel has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and I, Paul, have become a servant of it.
~Colossians 1:22-23 HCSB
When God Grounds
God grounding us in Christ will be what we want more than anything. Our relationship will deepen because we let go of what we’re clinging to as we know Him better. We discover our needs are fully met with Jesus. We no longer look for love in the wrong places or to other things to satisfy us.
Stop seeking satisfaction elsewhere. Crack open God’s Word, kneel in prayer, and ask God to ground you in Jesus through the power of His Holy Spirit.
Think of some ways you can ground yourself spiritually.
Father, because You love me, please ground me. Give me what’s for my good. In the powerful name of Jesus, amen.
