He determines the number of the stars; he gives to all of them their names. Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure.

God’s Stars

When I look up at the night sky, the awe of creation overtakes me. 

Innumerable stars fill the expanse, and yet God has given all of them names. What an incredible wonder.

God didn’t need to create the stars, yet He placed value on giving each star a name and made us aware of His activity. He cares with such detail. What a beautiful reminder of His infinite creativity and thoughtfulness.

Stressors of Life

Sometimes, the overwhelming responsibilities or stressors in life can creep in, leaving us feeling a million light years away from God’s nearness. The noise of deadlines, bills, pursuits, relationships, and busy schedules can crowd out the idea of an intimate closeness with God. Our minds and lives can get so heavy with thought and responsibility.

Focus on God

I’ve observed teachers who will use the classroom light switch as a signal to help quiet the noise and distractions that get out of hand. The teacher flickers the light switch and tells the students that while the lights are off, the classroom must be quiet. The change in the lighting immediately impacts the behavior, and the class becomes still. A hush fills the previously boisterous room, and the children settle into their seats, attentive to the teacher again. 

By day the Lord commands his steadfast love, and at night his song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life.

~Psakm 42:8 ESV

Our God, who created night and day, likewise quiets our hearts and minds as we observe the stillness of star-filled, inky skies. We can exchange the bustle of the day and the loudness of blaring sunlight for the stillness and soft starlight where we can rest and draw near to God.

God’s Love

When we look up to the vastness of the night sprinkled with more stars than any one of us can count, we are reminded of the incredible detail, memory, and thoughtful placement God established them by. In those moments, how can we not also feel the intensity of His love for us in all of creation? He is even more involved in the lives He gave His Son’s life for.  We can easily lose sight of the brilliant truth of His endless love for us when life is loud and our thoughts are noisy. What a gift to have the night gently still us and help us remember His kind love for us is greater than all the stars.

How can you ponder the awe of creation?

Thank You, God, that You not only know the name of every star but also know my name. When my world gets too loud to notice how You intimately care for every detail in my life, help me to see You clearly again. In Jesus’ name, amen.
