Treating God like an ATM
Delight yourself in the Lord.
~Psalm 37:4 ESV
Sometimes, I find myself treating God like an ATM instead of a faithful Father. It’s easy to fall into a transactional relationship with God rather than an intimate one. But God desires to connect with us on every level.
Yes, He’s an eager and faithful provider, but He’s so much more. He’s a friend who sticks closer than a brother. He’s a master artist who paints every sunrise and sunset and soothes wounded hearts. Clearing up confusion is His specialty. He’s a wise and affectionate Father who anticipates what we need.
I easily think of God as a faithful Father because my earthly dad modeled faithfulness. When I became a licensed driver at fifteen, my dad had the habit of slipping me a folded twenty-dollar bill. He never wanted my gas tank to fall below a quarter of a tank. Those twenties were his way of making sure it didn’t.
While I’m sure I asked Dad for money here and there, I remember him simply providing as part of our sweet, trusting relationship. I remember how he broke into a boyish grin when I entered the room. The way we talked about all kinds of things on our daddy-daughter dates. The way he said “I love you, Darlin’” with his cowboy twang.
But, I wonder how my relationship with my dad would have been had I only communicated with him when I needed or wanted something.
I often treat God like Santa Claus, presenting Him with a list of needs without pausing to enjoy His company. He deserves better. He created us to enjoy Him. As the Shorter Westminster Catechism says, “Man’s chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy him forever.”
Be still and know that I am God.
~Psalm 46:10 ESV
Yes, the Bible tells us to ask for what we need, but it also says to be still and know He is God. God knows He is everything we need. Today, let’s enjoy God and be conscious of the sweetness of our relationship. He’s right here with us as we live out our days.
Talk to God. Listen to Him. Enjoy Him today.
Lord, I want to spend the day together. Keep my soul in tune with Your presence. In Jesus’ name, amen
