Scattering Seed
Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.
~2 Peter 1:2 NIV
In farming, as in life, we must first give away something to have it multiplied. It’s the miracle of scattering seed.
Planting makes sense in farming because the seeds under the ground are growing and will multiply into a harvest. But somehow, when we scatter seed in other ways—tithing, giving to the poor, giving of our time and talents to others, serving, showing kindness–we can mistakenly believe that what we have given has disappeared.
However, we cannot see that there is an invisible principle of multiplication at work under the surface of our lives. When we scatter wisely, we will enjoy a harvest of what we have planted at some future date. Whatever we give away will be returned to us many times over.
It may be easy to give when things are going well, but when finances are tight or our time, faith, strength, or patience are short, we do ourselves a disservice by holding tightly to what God calls us to release. By holding back, we refuse to plant the seeds we need to have multiplied in our lives. Then, after the next harvest proves even more scant, we respond with tight-fisted fear. When we refuse to scatter seed and hold tightly to what little we have, we ensure our poverty.
Think about what you are holding tightly or where you lack. God wants you to release your grip on your seed and trust Him to multiply it.
Father, by Your Holy Spirit, empower me to be a force for good. Expand my faith to be wise, generous, patient, unselfish, and lavish in love. Inspire me to spread good, even in the face of evil, so my scattering seed will bring a great harvest that is joyful and sweet. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
