Knowing Where to Look
Looking
“I didn’t see it, Gra’ma,” my grandson said.
One summer, I kept two of my grands for two days. Our family took two cars to visit my dad at the nursing home. The twenty-five-minute drive through the countryside revealed a treat in the trees. One of the formations held the caricature of a dinosaur, my grandson’s favorite.
“Look for the mailbox with a wagon wheel and black-eyed Susans,” I said. “It’s all in knowing where to look.”
Many, O Lord my God, are Your wonderful works Which You have done; And Your thoughts toward us Cannot be recounted to You in order; If I would declare and speak of them, They are more than can be numbered.
~Psalm 40:5 NKJV
During their stay with me, we swam at a friend’s, hiked at a state park, visited playgrounds, played mini golf, and made daily trips to see my dad and their Grand Pappaw. I wanted them to know the connection of other generations and, on the way, we observed the world around us.
Our God … We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.
~2 Chronicles 20:12 NIV
Observing
“We fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:18 NIV).
Like looking for Dino in the trees, God has hidden gems in His Word for us to find. Character traits, lessons to learn, and enduring promises always await discovery. I use my concordance, notations in the margins, and the Bible dictionary. Most of all, I pray for eyes to see what the Lord wants to reveal. He’s the One who opens His Word and knows where I need to look.
“I want you woven into a tapestry of love, in touch with everything there is to know of God. Then you will have minds confident and at rest, focused on Christ, God’s great mystery. All the richest treasures of wisdom and knowledge are embedded in that mystery and nowhere else” (Colossians 2:2-3 MSG).
Think about where you look for answers.
Father, thank You for Your Holy Spirit’s work in opening my eyes and heart to Your Word and World. May I be ready to see the wonders You have.
