Jesus Sat
I love it when I read one of the Bible verses that says, “Jesus sat.” I like to envision what it’s like sitting there with Him. Imagine sitting at His feet by the Sea of Galilee and listening to His words of life. The waves are cresting on the shore, the birds crying out, and the wind carrying the salty scent through the air—all things He created. That would be amazing.
It blows my mind that my Creator and Savior thought it a good thing to sit. I much prefer sitting to standing. It feels more like a posture that prepares me to ponder, pray, and receive, not to mention rest and trust in the Lord.
When Jesus sat down, it was with purpose.
Later that same day, Jesus left the house and sat beside the lake. A large crowd soon gathered around him, so he got into a boat. Then he sat there and taught as the people stood on the shore.
~Matthew 13:1-2 NLT
It seems as if Jesus sat by the lake for a time of devotion and prayer, next to His beautiful creation, before He went to work teaching. When the crowd became too large, He got into a boat and sat down to teach the people on the shore. No doubt they could have seen and heard Him better. I think it would have been a beautiful place to hold church.
During His time on earth, Jesus sat at tables to eat with people seen as lesser members of society. He shocked religious leaders by doing this. But it showed His call to repentance to everyone.
Another aspect of Jesus’s sitting down signified completion and authority:
Under the old covenant, the priest stands and ministers before the altar day after day, offering the same sacrifices again and again, which can never take away sins. But our High Priest offered himself to God as a single sacrifice for sins, good for all time. Then he sat down in the place of honor at God’s right hand. There he waits until his enemies are humbled and made a footstool under his feet. For by that one offering, he forever made perfect those who are being made holy.
~Hebrews 10:11-14 NLT
It’s so encouraging to remember that Jesus sits in victory, waiting to bring us the fruit of His sacrifice: Himself. Such love.
Find time each day to sit and spend time with Jesus.
Loving Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Your Son to be a sacrifice for me. Lord Jesus, thank You for forever making me holy so I can have a relationship with You. I praise You and love You. In Your mighty name, amen.
