Encouragement for the Long Road
Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.
~1 Corinthians 15:58 ESV
Sometimes, we work diligently but see no evidence that our efforts make any difference. With time, we become discouraged and want to throw in the towel. Our good Father God, however, has words of encouragement for the long road.
He Is the Labor Lifter
Life can sometimes feel like an endless treadmill. We take step after step in the direction we believe we should go, but the scenery never changes. We question if we are heading the right way.
When we are weary, God’s Holy Spirit can comfort and refresh us, sending angels as ministers of hope and peace. They provide light on the horizon. Perhaps, we have faithfully planted and pulled weeds in the Lord’s field but feel the sun’s heat on our backs and sweat on our brow. God sends a cool breeze of refreshment and signs of a white harvest.
He Offers Discernment
If we have veered off course, the Father will redirect us. He gives reassuring signs when we’re on the right path.
He Is the Burden Lifter
We are not alone when we’re weary. Many believers rest their heads on tear-stained pillows at night. Many wear wide smiles while their hearts break. Others feel alone and discouraged with no one with whom to share their burden.
He Is Ever-Present
The Lord hasn’t left us behind on the long road. He has been there all along. Morning and evening, He paints His love across the sky in the brilliance of the rising and setting sun. He sings encouragement in the sweetness of birdsongs and hints at His power in the voice of waterfalls and crashing ocean waves.
He Is a Loving Father
We can run to our Father to have the crushing weight unburdened from our shoulders. We can lift our heads and holy hands to breathe fresh courage into our lungs and reignite our passion.
Being still before God invites His Spirit to remind us of our “why” so we can be energized to do our “what.” We can lay down our burdens, offer up our worship, and open our hearts to receive His lovingkindness and peace.
Relinquish the reins of control to partner with God in labor. If you are tired, your loving Father will lift you in His arms and carry you through. With Him, you’ll have strength for the long road.
Think of some ways to lean on God as your Father.
Father God, lift and carry me, so the strong winds I’ve been facing will suddenly be at my back. Renew me in Your presence and give me strength and hope for the long road. In Jesus’ name, amen.
