“Keep it simple” is what my friend Susan would say.

She was talking about what we believe about our relationship with the Lord. And truly it is simple when you think about it. God’s word says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16 NIV), and “Whosoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13 NIV).

His Word says, “That is if you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved” (Romans 10:9-10 NIV).

Simple, clear truths point the way to salvation. God is so good and He wants us to know Him. He loves us so much that He makes sure to keep the way simple. Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth and the life” (John 14:6 NIV).

Susan remarked, “Don’t forget your first Love.”  We wander away so easily and drift. We get involved in many things while forgetting the Lord’s love for us. “This is love; not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins” (1 John 4:10 NIV). The only reason we can return this love is because “He first loved us” (1 John 4:19b NIV).

Lastly Susan advised, “Remember why you love Jesus.” We love Him because of Who He is and all that He has done for us.  From the cross Jesus said “It is finished.” Yes, His life on Earth was finished, but more than that, He did what I could not do; He settled my account with God. The sinless One became sin for me and received punishment that was mine. By accepting His finished work on the cross, we are placed in right standing with God. Father God made us His child through the work Jesus accomplished on Calvary’s cross.
