Come to Me
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
~Matthew 11:28-30 NIV
Come to Me
Jesus said, “Come to me.” Although He spoke to a crowd, He gave a personal invitation. And He speaks to each of us uniquely because He knows us. He knows the burdens we carry in our hearts and how we become weary under the load. He offers rest and refreshing.
Jesus presents a picture of physical labor, but sometimes mental weariness can be worse than the physical. His teaching refers to the exhaustion His audience must have felt as they attempted to fulfill the crushing requirements of Jewish laws that had been added to God’s original laws.
But that’s not us. Believers know grace. Yet, how many churchgoers labor under a burden to meet standards not created by God? Whether from the leadership or from the whispers of the enemy, we feel the expectations laid upon us.
Take My Yoke
Jesus’ answer is not to drop our obligations but to take His yoke.–a yoke He describes as easy and light.
Easy comes from Strong’s word 5543, chrestos, which refers to something useful, pleasant, good, comfortable, suitable, and serviceable. My Bible note* says a chrestos yoke “fits well and is built on a personal relationship with God by the indwelling Spirit.” In other words, the Holy Spirit leads without loading us up with ill-fitting, heavy burdens.
Learn from Me
Jesus says if we abide in His word, we shall know the truth and the truth will make us free (John 8:32 NKJV). God isn’t impressed with our prideful performance, but He gives grace (undeserved blessing and unmerited favor) to the humble (1 Peter 5:5 NKJV). The joy of the Lord is our strength (Nehemiah 8:10 NKJV).
Find Rest for Your Soul
The ways of God’s kingdom bring rest. This doesn’t mean we are idle, but Jesus did the work of living a perfect and sinless life, and He invites us to abide in His righteousness. We follow the Spirit in transformation as we trust and obey His leadership. Because we are free from condemnation (Romans 8:1 NKJV), we can grow at our own pace, make mistakes, be forgiven, and know Jesus better in the process.
If you have become weary and burdened with the cares of this world or the demands of religious performance, remember that Jesus goes with you, helping you to discard added rules and receive His yoke instead.
What are some ways you can find rest for your soul?
Jesus, I praise and thank You for all that You have done for me. I gratefully submit to walk, yoked with You, and enjoy the rest You give me on the way. In Jesus’ precious name, amen.
