Cat Call to Prayer
I’m not talking about that kind of cat call, but the actual cat call to prayer from my formerly stray black cat, who adopted me fifteen years ago. She called me to join her in another room to sit and pray.
From the hallway outside my bedroom, a sound like a hoarse, metallic screeching persisted, as if a tiny Pterodactyl summoned me. Then a medium-sized short-haired cat appeared in the doorway, calling me to prayer.
My Maddy continued with her unusual meows, which got progressively louder until I followed her into the living room and joined her on the floor.
At first, I thought she wanted me to rub her belly, but then I noticed that my state of being was similar on the nights she called me out. It was always at a time when my heart was heavy for me or someone else. That’s when I got a cat call to prayer. I don’t know how she knows. But I do know God surely works through His creatures.
He used ravens to feed and care for the prophet Elijah. God used a talking donkey to reprove the wayward prophet Balaam. And He used a colt to transport Jesus into Jerusalem, which fulfilled prophecy.
And God uses my usually quiet and sweet black cat to call me to lie on my stomach on the floor of my living room and pour out my heart to God. I thank God for her. When I am going about my typical routine to get ready for bed, she stubbornly calls me until I stop and take time to pray.
Praise the Lord from the earth, you great sea creatures and all ocean depths … wild animals and all cattle, small creatures and flying birds.
~Psalm 148:7,10 NLT
My cat also calls me to praise the Lord. I try to start any prayer time with praise and thanksgiving, which always puts things in a proper perspective.
God demonstrated his divine protection by using lions to intervene in Daniel’s unjust death sentence.
My God sent His angel and shut the lions’ mouths, and they have not harmed me, since I was found innocent before Him; and also toward you, O king, I have committed no crime.
~Daniel 6:22 NASB
But my favorite animal reference in the Bible is when Jesus calls Himself the Lion of Judah. (More lions. Is God a cat person? Just kidding, Lord!)
But one of the twenty-four elders said to me, “Stop weeping! Look, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the heir to David’s throne, has won the victory. He is worthy to open the scroll and its seven seals.”
~Revelation 5:5 NLT
Such beautiful imagery. I’m a big animal lover, so I appreciate God’s use of His creatures to accomplish His particular task.
