Can You Relate
I have tried many times to guess how God would do something, constantly running scenarios through my mind of how to plan for what God might have me do next or how life would play out. I prayed but tried to plan it out by myself. Can you relate?
The Israelites may never have imagined the scenario when God led them through the wilderness and away from Egypt. God would lead them by a cloud during the day and a pillar of fire at night. Then, God brought them to the brink of the Red Sea with the Egyptian army advancing against them. What a terrifying moment that must have been. In their minds, how could they have seen any way out? How could they have guessed that God would split the sea, give them dry ground to cross, and then drown their enemies? What a wildly unexpected solution.
To him who divided the Red Sea in two, for his steadfast love endures forever; and made Israel pass through the midst of it, for his steadfast love endures forever.
~Psalm 136:13-14 ESV
In my wildest imagination, I couldn’t dream up such a scene. I’m just not that creative, but I am a creative person. Yet, I think my creativity and planning can interfere even more while trying to entrust the impossible to God’s creative hands. If I can’t imagine it or see the way out, I find it easy to think there will not be a way out, much like the Israelites must have felt.
I typically want my hands in the situation so that I feel life isn’t so uncertain. But when I look through Scripture, I see that God often leads in a manner that requires blind trust. He requires us to believe that He is more than capable and that good will result, even when circumstances seem impossible. He stands above all circumstances as the Way-maker, but the way is never in our way.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
~Isaiah 55:9 ESV
I can trust my creativity or the Creator of the universe. What is it about blind faith that makes me wrestle for security through my ideas versus God’s incredible ways? Isn’t God‘s track record perfect? Yet, my human reasoning naturally wages war against trusting the world’s most creative, faithful, and kind Savior.
We all struggle while waiting for the next step, especially as timelines approach, doctor reports come in, bills come due, and deadlines hang in the balance. Maybe it’s not as serious, but when we are planners, we like to have the future lined out in a tangible and mentally acceptable way.
I invite you to find rest in God’s track record. Lean into Bible promises and lay down the struggle. In these moments, you will become closely knit in your relationship with God and find yourself entirely relying on Him instead of your strength and understanding.
Acknowledge God in all your ways and let Him make your paths straight.
God, thank You that my impossibilities are not frightening or uncertain to You. Thank You for your character, which stands firm, and your creativity, which surpasses any imagination here on earth. You patiently lead me through life with kindness and wisdom. I trust in You and lay down my efforts to work things out by myself. In Jesus’ name, amen.
