Are You Thirsty?
Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give me a drink’, you would asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” ~John 4:10 NKJV
What a day to have a yard sale. It was a blazing-hot day in July. At least the shade of the huge trees in our front yard provided a cooler location. Our neighbors were away for the weekend, but I felt sorry for the person I heard mowing nearby. I looked over the hedge between our houses and saw a young man pushing the mower. I waved at him and asked, “Are you thirsty?”
He turned the mower off and came over and rested under the trees. With pleasure, I provided that cool drink for him. Then, we struck up a conversation. We refreshed our souls by sharing how the Lord was working in our lives.
Jesus asks a Samaritan woman for a drink. She was surprised that a Jewish man would speak to her, much less ask her to draw water from the well for Him. She was also astonished when Jesus asked her to receive living water, which He alone could provide. If she drank that water, she would never thirst again.
She wanted this water so she would no longer have to visit the well. Jesus told her about her life. As the conversation continued, Jesus revealed that He was the Messiah. She believed Him. But the story didn’t end there. She told the whole town and invited them to see Jesus. This is our mission also. To tell others about Jesus Christ, the Savior, the One who refreshes and restores our souls.
On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”
~John 7:37-38 NKJV
This invitation is extended to everyone. God fills us with the Holy Spirit when we receive Jesus as our Savior. And as the Scripture says, “out of his (our) heart will flow rivers of living water.” As we hunger and thirst for righteousness, God will fill us.
But receiving spiritual sustenance is not the end of our story. Like the woman at the well, we should seek opportunities to share this thirst-quenching spiritual water with others. Sharing the refreshing spiritual water is part of the Great Commission that Jesus invites every individual to participate in. Will you follow this commandment and share spiritual water?
If you are thirsty, drink from the well of living water. Then, share with others.
Father God, thank You for the spiritual water You provide through Jesus Christ. Help me to hunger and thirst for Your righteousness and to drink from the living well. In Jesus’ name, amen.
