Every Day Is Sunday
Every day is Sunday in my house. My ninety-year-old father rises to find his Sunday clothes—dress shirt, nice pants, suit jacket, feet clothed with hospital skid-proof socks tucked into his dress shoes. Dad anticipates the opportunity to go to church.
I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go into the house of the Lord.”
~Psalm 122:1 NKJV
Dementia has messed with Dad’s daily perceptions but has not diminished his desire to spend time in the Lord’s house. He looks forward to all aspects of the service, from being greeted at the door to singing, corporate prayer, the preaching of the Word, and community with other believers.
Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.
~Psalm 84:10 NIV
Every Day Can Be a Regular Day
Surprise and dismay overcome Dad whether I tell him it is Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday. He changes back into his comfy clothes and settles into the day ahead, resigned to staying home for a regular day of the week. He picks up a book and enters the world of words that lie smoothly on the page. Those same words get stuck between Dad’s brain and tongue. But when we ask him to pray at mealtime, his prayers come out with eloquence and conviction.
Out of the depths, I cry to you, Lord; Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy.
~Psalm 130:1-2 NIV
Every Day Can Be a Sunday
I often wonder if every day is Sunday in my heart. God gives us the opportunity to meet with Him every waking moment and to prepare our hearts and clothe our minds to come into His presence. I can greet Him in the morning, sing praises to His Name, pray throughout the day, dig into His Word, and encourage other believers.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
~Psalm 23:5-6 NIV
I’m glad the calendar doesn’t limit our access to God. He is available today and every day to meet and greet and sit at His feet. What an awesome God we serve.
Make every day Sunday in your heart.
Lord, thank You for inviting me to meet with You today. I open the doors of my heart to welcome You in and celebrate sanctuary in Your sweet presence.
