Martin Wiles: The Perfect Guide
The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.”~Psalm 32:8 NLT
We wandered along, not knowing exactly where to go.
My wife and I, along with another couple, found ourselves in Savannah, Georgia, at Bonaventure Cemetery. Quite a few famous people are buried here, but we wanted to see the gravesite of Johnny Mercer—a famous singer—and the statue of Gracie Lady—a young girl who died from pneumonia but whose picture became famous because of this sculpture.
Before meandering through the cemetery, we stopped at the visitor’s center to get a map and an overview of the grounds. The gentlemen on duty told us exactly what blocks the graves we wanted to see were in.
E-block was our first destination, the place where Gracie Lady was. As we wandered about, trying to find her grave but having no luck, a woman walking a small dog passed by. We struck up a conversation with her and discovered she lived only five minutes away and walked through the cemetery almost daily.
She knew a great deal about the history and was a guide we didn’t have to pay to give us a tour. When we asked her about Gracie, she knew exactly where she was—and took us there, telling us other interesting historical facts along the way. Although she wasn’t originally from Savannah, or even the South, we could tell she enjoyed the history of the area. She proved to be a generous guide.
But David had a better guide—a perfect guide. One who took him along the pathway of life. One who advised him and watched over him, beginning when he was a mere shepherd boy minding his father’s sheep.
He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name.~Psalm 23:3 NLT
Guides hold importance, especially when we’re in unfamiliar territory. And life is unfamiliar territory. We’ve never lived it before. We may know where we want to go—or have no idea. Regardless, we can’t see what’s ahead, so having someone who has traveled the way before and who is all-knowing is just the ticket we need. The same guide David had.
God guides with love…unconditional love. He’ll never steer us in the wrong direction because He has a plan for us and is interested in our life’s details. He wants us to arrive at His desired destination. And He’s more excited about guiding us than the woman we met in Savannah. After all, He’s the Creator and knows how much we can enjoy life if we’ll just follow His lead.
Don’t settle for just any old guide. Choose the perfect guide.
Are you following the perfect guide God has provided which is His Word?
Father God, we ask You to guide us along life’s pathways.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
