Worship Stops the Enemy
Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth; Break forth in song, rejoice, and sing praises.
~Psalm 98:4 NKJV
Worship stops the enemy.
When our church praise team leads us into worship, exalting the Lord’s name and declaring His greatness, my spirit rises with joy. My heart sings as well as my mouth, the words becoming a declaration of Jesus’ worthiness. He is the King to the exclusion of anything and anyone else—especially the enemy.
Doing Spiritual Warfare
How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, you who weakened the nations! For you have said in your heart, “I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God.”
~Isaiah 14:12-13 NKJV
Satan once worshipped God and occupied a place of honor until pride captured his heart. Isaiah says he was cut down along with the rest of the rebel angels because he wanted God’s throne for himself.
When God created Adam and Eve and gave them authority over the Garden, Satan saw an opportunity to regain some of his former glory. The results were tragic when Eve succumbed to his lie and Adam failed to intervene. Humanity lost their intended relationship with God and Satan obtained authority over the world they were assigned to steward.
God, however, pronounced a solution along with the curse. In time, He made His move through the perfect life of Jesus.
Matthew’s Word
Matthew records the enemy’s attempts to block that plan when Satan made his pitch to God’s Son: “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.’ But Jesus said to him, ‘Away with you, Satan! For it is written, You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve'” (Matthew 4:9-10 NKJV).
Jesus, however, replied with God’s Word and did what Adam had failed to do. He lived a sinless life. Then Jesus bore the punishment for all mankind’s sin and took back the keys to the Kingdom. By His death on the cross and resurrection, he’d mounted the ultimate coup. Because of his victory over sin and death, authority over Satan’s work reverts to every person who accepts the redeeming work of Jesus Christ. As we acknowledge Him, our worship declares the enemy’s defeat! (Romans 5:17; 8:37 NKJV)
Whether we honor God in private or corporate worship, we stand with Jesus. He is King and Lord over every circumstance.
Taking a Stand
James exhorts us to take this stand: “Resist the devil and he will flee from you” (James 4:7 NKJV).
As a child of the King, we wield power. Whether it’s a personal situation or something much bigger in intercessory prayer, we strike a blow against the devil’s schemes when we exalt the name of Jesus in our praise and worship.
Remembering
Times will come when the enemy seems to control things, but even if our emotions feel weak at the moment, we have a powerful weapon in worship and praise. Remember, Satan is a created being, but God is the sovereign creator.
Jesus rose from the grave because even death for our sins couldn’t keep Him down. His is the name above all names.
How do you acknowledge the power you have through genuine, heartfelt worship?
Dear Father, God of all creation, I lift your Name on high. I praise You in every circumstance, knowing You deserve the Glory. In Jesus’ name, amen.
