Wings as Eagles
But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
~Isaiah 40:31 KJV
My favorite vacation spot is Alaska.
And one of my favorite activities while there is using my binoculars to scan the skies for bald eagles. Oh, to be able to soar with wings as eagles.
Scanning the forest, their bodies blend in with the trees, but their heads are clearly visible. They look like many ping-pong balls dotting the trees. They are such majestic and graceful creatures with powerful wings that lift them to soar among the clouds.
I don’t know about you, but I wasn’t born with wings. So, it has always perplexed me how a terrestrial creation like myself could possibly fly without them.
The Lord led me to my concordance. I found that the word “wait” does not mean to simply bide our time. Wait means to “gather, bind together, expect, look, wait patiently.” When we wait on the Lord, we cling to Him and bind our hearts with His as we patiently wait and expect Him to move.
He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.
~Psalm 91:4 NLT
“Wings” in Scripture refers to the sleeves of God’s garment. As we cling to Him, He wraps us in His arms. By His power, we rise. There, gliding in the heavens, we can look down on our circumstances and see things from Heaven’s perspective. In His shadow, we understand that whether we land on a mountaintop or in the valley, we can have hope and peace because we are in His arms.
Therefore, cling to God. Bind your heart with His and wait patiently and expectantly. Like a hen covers her chicks beneath her feathers, let Him embrace you with His wings.
What are some spiritually productive ways you can wait to rise above your circumstances?
Father God, I cling to You and wait in hopeful expectation. So, there in Your embrace, lift me to rise and soar beneath Your wings as eagles. In Jesus’ name, amen.
