Who Are You
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
~2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV
Theme Song
In 2000, a new television series appeared with the theme song, “Who Are You.” One of the song’s verses talks of a person who stretched, hiccupped, and looked back on their busy day. They had spent eleven hours in the tin pan. Surely, God must have another way for them to make a living.
“Who Are You” seems to reflect how society looks at others and themselves. We have lost who we are, leading us down a destructive path that engulfs our physical and mental health. We wander around helplessly as sheep that have lost their shepherd. Around every corner is a wolf that waits patiently to ambush us in our weakest moment as we lay hopelessly at night. We attempt to sleep, but sleep alludes us. Our minds wander in a vast confused state as we ponder who we are. I wonder how many end their day by saying, “God, there’s got to be another way. Who am I?”
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
~Genesis 1:27 ESV
Our Identity
Understanding our identity in God requires understanding who God is and what He says about himself and us. Our identity is not in our joy or our suffering. Rather, our identity is in Christ and eternally secure, whether we have joy or suffering. Our circumstances may change, but who we are remains the same forever.
When we allow people in our lives to define us, or when we make up our own definition of who we are, we will be veering away from the Truth. The only One able to give us our identity is our Maker.
Sunshine Gray – Counselor and Life Coach
We must never forget whom we identify with. So, even in the dark times of life, when the dark clouds engulf us with concern, we must remember it is not our circumstances or emotions that identify us. Instead, it is who we are in Christ. We are a child of God.
Who are you, and how do you stay grounded in your identity?
Lord Jesus, I pray that I will never forget who I am in you. In Jesus’ name, amen.
