Who Am I
For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
~Ephesians 2:10 NIV
My grandson wore a headband with an animal picture on it. Then, he ran to his daddy and asked, “Who am I?”
In response, his daddy jumped up and down and screeched like a monkey.
“I’m a monkey!”
“That’s right,” we all responded.
My grandson’s next words were no surprise to any of the family.
“I want to play again.”
Of course, the game continued with a bunch of adults jumping and screeching like everything from a bunny to an elephant.
Copycat
Good times and laughter prevailed with the game, but the question made me stop and ponder who I was.
My grandson relied on the clues given by the other players to discover his identity. How did the animal look or act? What sound did it make? I had to ask myself who I looked like.
Through the years of searching and building my own identity, the temptation to look to others for what I should be had been huge. So and so looks like a great Christian. They are involved in many ministries. Whenever I hear them pray, they seem to touch the hem of His garment. I can’t ever sound like that. I need to be more like them.
Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
~Colossians 3:2 NIV
Christlike
Instead of looking at others, our focus should be on Christ. In the child’s game, the identity of the animal was written on a card the child couldn’t see. Often, we can’t see who we are, but thankfully God knows our true identity.
God waits for us to turn to Him and ask, “Who am I?” He’s given us His Word and Spirit to guide us on our path. All we must do is trust and surrender to Him. Along the way, we’ll grow more and more into the image of His Son.
For those God foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.
~Romans 8:29 NIV
Think of some preconceived notions you need to relinquish to allow yourself to be conformed to God’s image.
Dear Lord, guide me as I struggle to live this life before You today. Help me to find my identity in You. I pray each decision that I make brings glory to You. Amen.
