What Interests You?
Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.
~Colossians 3:2 ESV
Like and Dislikes
We all have different likes and dislikes. But having them makes us unique and provides variety in life. So, what interests you?
We can choose to watch each Chiefs game to see if Taylor Swift is watching Travis Kelce from her private booth in the stands. Or we can tune in to the procedures leading up to who will become the next President of the United States. Perhaps, we anxiously await the release of the next Marvel movie. Personally, I am engrossed in beekeeping, writing, Sci-Fi, ice cream, and sweet tea.
The KJV replaces the word “minds” with the word “affections” and stirs the idea “to become obsessed with.” This suggests something more than just a passing interest.
In Acts 8, an unnamed person displays a fascination with the scriptures and the Hebrew God. God calls Philip to speak to this Ethiopian eunuch to explain the scriptures. The Ethiopian demonstrates his obsession with the Hebrew God through the following actions:
* Returning from worshiping in Jerusalem
* Reading Scripture from the book of Isaiah
* Listening to God’s servant
* Desiring to be baptized
* Going on his way, rejoicing
Additionally, some scholars suggest this high-ranking treasurer for the queen went back to Ethiopia and helped to start the first Christian church there.
Priorities
This Ethiopian dignitary set his mind on things above. Therefore, he possibly helped to make his country one of the first Christian nations. Philip set his mind on the things above and agreed to teach one person who influenced the entire country.
How can you lay aside the interests of this world? Furthermore, how can you become more obsessed with knowing and serving God?
Father God, turn my worldly interests heavenward so I can experience a deep desire to set my mind and heart on things above. In Jesus name, Amen.
