The Value of Fragrance
Perfume’s Unchanging Value
Your anointing oils are fragrant; your name is oil poured out. ~Song 1:3 ESV
Consider the value of a fragrance.
Perfume does not change in value, no matter what we spill it onto. We can spill it on the floor or onto a wealthy person’s skin, and the value remains the same, as does the fragrance. Perfume can sit on a shelf untouched or be cherished one dab at a time by someone who has saved for years to purchase just a small vile.
Perfume can evoke feelings, memories, and passions. It can remind us of someone’s identity. Fragrance differs from other consumables that, once used, are gone. It carries a lasting impact. It comes into the room on a person and lingers long after the person has left.
The Perfume of Divine Love
If God had a high-end label perfume line, it would be of extravagant, costly love, and we would be His bottles that He pours it from. We are to love extravagantly because He loves us the same way. God commissions us to pour onto others the supply He pours on us.
But this sweet fragrance never comes from us. We are simply the bottles in all colors, shapes, and sizes that He fills with His signature fragrance. Nor does His supply ever run dry.
God’s fragrance of love is extravagantly expensive and alters those on whom it is poured. Whether we long for it or overlook it, the fragrance has an inherent value in itself, not by its recipient or even its container.
Commissioned to Spread Divine Perfume
But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing. ~2 Corinthians 2:14-15 ESV
God entrusts us to share Christ’s fragrance. What an incredible thought. As His vessels, we remind God of the love inside us that He has lavished on us. This love, in turn, captivates those we encounter with an imprinting-like fragrance.
The more we understand God’s extravagant love, the easier it is to pour that love freely into others. When we realize the value of such divine love, we learn to cherish this priceless fragrance in our own hearts. The more we refresh ourselves in God’s presence, the more powerfully it lingers wherever we go.
Let’s go fragrantly, love with extravagance, and run to the Father to fill us up to overflowing.
How are you carrying Christ’s fragrance within and sharing it with others?
Father God, because of life’s cares, I often feel ordinary. But You say I can carry the fragrance of Christ. Help me as I go, to fill each room with the fragrance of Your divine love. Help me spend time with You so You can fill me to overflow with the sweet perfume of Your divine love. In this way, I’ll have Your love to pour out onto those in my sphere of influence. In Jesus’ name, amen.
