And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.~Matthew 24:12-13 ESV
Recently, a huge ice storm swept through the area where I live. Damage of historical proportions occurred when the weight of enormous ice accumulation splintered trees and snapped power lines. The stark scene of roads littered with fallen trees, sparking powerlines, and scattered branches was sobering.
The Storm
So many trees fell on houses and cars, blocking roads. They just couldn’t withstand the cold and the weight of it all. The toll was enormous. The landscape in my town is forever changed now. People struggle to recover from the impact. The storm damage was extremely costly and a perfect example of how important healthy connections are for everyone around. Without them, danger is guaranteed.
Do not be arrogant toward the branches. If you are, remember it is not you who support the root, but the root that supports you.~Romans 11:18 ESV
Many verses in Scripture refer to believers as branches. As such, we must remain intact with Christ being our life source. I often think we forget the impact our connection to Christ has on those around us. When correlating the imagery that the Bible gives us, of being branches connected to the source of life, and this storm, it offers a sobering image of how much damage can come from not staying rooted and grounded in love.
Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.~1 Corinthians 10:12-13 ESV
Our culture makes it easy to become individualistic. And our Christian walk can become so personal that we forget how deeply our lives impact everyone around us. How we hold fast and if we fall matters.
As I considered the weight of the ice and the large limbs that had fallen, I realized a part of the fall had to do with how full of life and resilient the tree was. The more brittle and unhealthy the branches, the more of the tree that shattered, splintered, or broke off, causing damage throughout. Healthy branches have greater resilience and flexibility, with a stronger lifeflow that nurtures their bonds through the base of the tree. Therefore, those trees held up through the weight of the storm, causing no damage and suffering little loss.
The Connection
As we navigate difficult times, can we bow without breaking? When life gets heavy and storms come in, do we remain connected to the life source of Christ and let his life flow freely to us as an extension of him to the world? Do we hold onto the weight that surrounds us of too much knowledge, too much cultural heartache, too much emotional overload, consuming our focus? How can we avoid snapping or falling off if we stay rooted and grounded in Christ alone? If we keep our eyes on Christ and saturate ourselves with His living word, we will hold fast in our testimony and become a shelter rather than a risk for those around us.
For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.~Ephesians 3:14-19 ESV
Make a plan to stay rooted and grounded during the stark scenes of life.
God, sometimes this life becomes cold. It is tempting to allow the coldness to seep into our souls and forget that we are extensions of You. Help me to stand firm in my faith, rooted and grounded in Your truth, and be quick to bow. Help me not to snap under the tension of the world around me. Instead, may I extend Your grace and goodness as I live resiliently by Your mercy and living word. Amen
