The Ocean of Promises
And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus.
~Philippians 4:19 NIV
On a recent trip to the shore with my four-year-old niece, I watched in amusement as she played in a small tidal pool. Again and again, she filled her bucket until she depleted the water supply. In distress, she cried, “Oh no, I have no more water!” I turned her around so she could see the vast ocean before her. She took off screaming and laughing, racing toward the shoreline as if the water would disappear.
God has given us His Word on which to establish our lives. Like my niece, sometimes we don’t see the ocean of promises available to sustain us. We forget God’s provision is without limit.
In life, there are seasons of abundance and seasons of drought. It’s easy to have faith in God and feel at peace when we’re doing well. But when life’s circumstances shake us, our faith often wavers.
Paul firmly believed God would supply all his needs because he had seen God provide ways of escape, divine protection, and sufficient grace in his time of greatest need. God will do no less for us when we place our assurance in Him.
When we’re anxious about how we’ll make the next mortgage payment, or we receive an unwelcome health diagnosis, we need only turn to Scripture to remind ourselves that God has every detail under His sovereign care. He provides in ways that far exceed our asking.
I can say with confidence: God never fails. I’ve experienced His provision firsthand. When I was desperate and in peril of losing my home and all that mattered most in life, God provided in ways no one could have conceived.
For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.
~2 Corinthians 1:20 NIV
The next time you encounter a crisis that causes you to question God’s faithfulness, remember He’s promised to satisfy every need with His abundant provision. What God has promised, He will fulfill.
Let’s turn to our all-sufficient God to receive His strength, comfort, guidance, and the ocean of promises.
Gracious Father, thank You for Your faithfulness and the many ways and times You’ve supplied what I’ve most needed. May Your Spirit prompt me to turn to Your Word and place my confidence in Your sufficiency. In Jesus ’ name, amen.
