Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.~Philippians 2:4 ESV
As I went to church that morning, I was unaware of how the love of a little girl was going to impact me.
I held the door for a friend. She had a cane and walked a bit slower than me. For that matter, she had a few years on me, too. It wasn’t that long ago her husband passed away. Life for my friend has been harder than usual for the past few years.
Every time I see this sweet lady, she has taken time to fix her hair, apply make-up just so, and choose an outfit that is beautiful on her. The smile she wears only compliments her adornments, and she beams from the inside out.
After I held the door, we stood in the hall and talked, then made our way into the worship center. She sat on the front row, alone, and I found my place a few rows back with another friend.
A LITTLE GIRL’S LOVE
As soon as the music began, a little girl made her way across the sanctuary to sit with my friend. She inched up beside the lady, and a smile spread across both their faces. Partway through the second song, the lady put her arm around the girl, pulled her close, and squeezed her in a side hug–beaming the entire time. Sometimes, she leaned over and whispered in the little girl’s ear, and both of them grinned or giggled.
Tears trickled down my cheeks as the scene unfolded. Such a simple, thoughtful gesture by a sweet eight-year-old girl changed my friend’s whole day.
DO GOOD TO OTHERS
Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.~Hebrews 13:16 ESV
We should all take a lesson from this sweet, little child. One simple gesture. One small act of kindness. One choice of compassion. Maybe it’s a phone call. A letter. An email. A text message. Or simply a hug. Just one moment can impact a person more deeply than we may ever know.
What simple gesture can you make this week to impact someone else?
Father God, give me eyes to see people around me. Help me to think beyond my own needs and wants and look to those of others. Show me what seemingly small thing I can do to bless someone else. In Jesus’ name, amen.
