The Importance of Light
As I watch the tiny yellow flowers on my Roma tomato plants develop from tiny flowers to delicious, vibrant red globes of fruit, I consider the importance of light. Sure, I do my part by watering the plants and fertilizing the soil, but if the fragrant green stalks don’t receive the full sunlight they need, they will die.
Light is so important that it was high on God’s creation-to-do list.
Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. Then he separated the light from the darkness.”
~Genesis 1:3-4 NLT
And that marked the first day of creation.
So, light is good. It cuts the darkness. Light also exposes the darkness. Ephesians 5:8 tells us that darkness cannot exist where there is light. That’s powerful.
My favorite facet of light is that Jesus is the Light of the World.
Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”
~John 8:12 NLT
I am greatly comforted that I will no longer walk in darkness, for Jesus is my Savior and Light. I have the light that leads to life. Like my tomatoes, which grow in the light, I live and flourish because of Jesus.
Think of ways you walk out your daily life with Jesus as your guiding light. Then, consider ways you can be a light to those in your sphere of influence.
Heavenly Father, please help me remember this great promise that Jesus is my light, and darkness has no power over me. Also, remind me that You are the Creator of all things. When I worry or feel anxious, help me remember that nothing is beyond Your control. Show me how to shine Your light in the world around me. In Jesus ‘ name, amen.
