The Candle
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
~Genesis 1:1-4 KJV
LIGHTING OUR CANDLE
Imagine we are at the beginning of time when we light the candle.
The darkness was complete. No light from the sun, moon, or stars existed yet. This would be the only time in eternity, both past and future, that no light abounded.
GOD, THE ULTIMATE ARTIST
God spread His canvas before Him. He took the blackened surface and sprinkled flashes of light, giving each star and its planets their own identities. But the Lord bestowed an extra amount of love on one of those planets.
GOD FORMED THE EARTH
“This will be my ultimate creation–a place of unparalleled beauty in all the universe,” God said. “I will set it at just the right distance from its star so life can exist. Then, I will place this planet in motion so there will be equal times of lightness and darkness as it rotates on its axis. When the earth faces the sun, the day will come, and as it turns, the night will appear. Night will be a time of rest and restoration for My beautiful creation. However, I will not leave the earth in total darkness during that time. A lesser light will reflect the sun on the other side of the world. Also, the stars will shine brighter at night to guide and light the way of those I will create.”
GOD BROUGHT THE FIRE
“Besides the sun, moon, and stars, I will also bring fire into the world for people to use to light their paths as they make their way through the darkness—the fire of candles and of the Holy Spirit.
What type of candle do you carry in your soul so you can light the way for others living in darkness?
Lord God, make me an instrument in Your hands. Light my candle and let it be a beacon for others. Let my light shine brightly so those I meet will want to learn more about You. Thank You, Father, for Your beautiful creation and for Your gift of light and the Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name, amen.
