Taking Hold of the Secret
Taking hold of the secret makes life easier.
How far would five small barley loaves and two small fish go among so many people?”
Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.
– John 6:9,11 NIV
This testimony of God’s miraculous power is told in every Sunday School class. I love the disparity between the needs–a hungry crowd of 5,000–and what little Jesus had to work with—a young boy’s lunch.
All four gospels record the story of Jesus feeding the 5,000. I love John’s rendering because it mentions that a boy gave his loaves and fish to help feed the multitude. The miracle began when, in faith, a child released what he had into Jesus’ hands.
We come to God daily with our list of needs because we need peace, healing, or financial assistance. We offer our requests but leave carrying the same burdens and blessings we came with. When we do, we miss the secret—the necessary step to contentment and a light burden. God wants us to lay all we have—both good and bad—at His feet and leave it there. We must release to God what we have before He can multiply it. Only as we release our burdens can He lift them.
Are you holding tightly to what you carry, while at the same time asking God to multiply or remove it? Could you experience your miracle by releasing everything to His keeping?
What are some ways you can release your burdens to Jesus?
Father God, in fear, I hold tightly to the load I carry. Calm my heart. In childlike faith, I open my hands to both give and receive from You. I relinquish control and release both the good and bad I carry into Your miracle-working hands. I put my trust in You, my Lord, who gives and takes away. In Jesus’ name, amen.
