No Light No Beauty

VineWords Devotions and More

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech . . . their words to the ends of the world.  ~ Ps. 19:1-2a, 4b NIV With no light, no beauty exists. Recently, my heart eagerly waited to wake, grab my Bible and journal, and settle on my front porch. September’s cooler mornings bade me soak in the ever-changing sky before the sun appeared and shone its glorious … Continue reading →

Throw Away the Idols

Throw Away the Idols

VineWords Devotions and More

I have a confession: I am a people-pleaser and perfectionist. I needed to throw away the idols. Making mistakes makes me feel less than valuable in others’ eyes. But one week, God allowed me to feel as if mistakes overwhelmed me. I forgot an appointment, I was rude to a waiter, and I had writing errors on a document. I felt embarrassed and shameful—cringing inwardly, knowing friends had seen my imperfections. Until I read Isaiah’s words. This is the way; … Continue reading →

Peace in a Storm

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge.  ~Psalm 19:1–2 NIV Peace in a Storm Early last night, a June storm pummeled our home. Rain prattled against the window, Thunder rumbled the sky, all the earth drenched–– Each tree branch, every flowering plant And blade of grass drank deeply of heaven, Pouring its provision of sustenance For ten long minutes, … Continue reading →

Worshipping God in the Pain

Worshipping God in the Pain

VineWords Devotions and More

When Jephthah returned to his home in Mizpah, who should come out to meet him but his daughter. ~Judges 11:34 NIV I have learned a lot about worshipping God in the pain.   As a little girl, I remember shaking the handbells in Sunday school and feeling happy inside. While growing up, I took piano lessons and later majored in music in college. I loved singing because music brought me joy. But painful events later in life plunged me into … Continue reading →

According to the Need

VineWords Devotions and More

That he may uphold the cause of his servant and the cause of his people Israel according to each day’s need, so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the Lord is God and that there is no other.   1 Kings 8:59b, 60 NIV This morning, my heart felt heavy, and the day had only begun. After breakfast, my husband and I prayed about a family member struggling in their marriage and another who faced logistical … Continue reading →

Walking with God

VineWords Devotions and More

Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day.             ~Genesis 3:8a NIV Walking with God is much like one weekend when I took a walk with a good friend. When we greeted each other, we giggled. We hadn’t seen each other in weeks. While we walked around the loop in my neighborhood, we talked … Continue reading →

"I Am Watching" by Lynne Head

I Am Watching

VineWords Devotions and More

s I opened my Bible one chilly winter morning, I heard in my mind, “Child, you know Me, and I am watching.” Instinctively, I thought of a snag I had with a purchase I made the day before for my pregnant daughter. …

the same beareth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

Counting Woes

Counting Woes

Can you remember having a day like this when you counted “woes” instead of blessings? The enemy of our soul is happy when we are distracted by the trials that we are experiencing. Then we won’t notice God’s beauty surrounding us. My mind was on me and all I needed to accomplish, instead of remembering all Jesus has done for me. …

No Place to Sit

No Place to Sit

Prior to the coming of the Messiah, the priest had to repeat the same duties for the same people over and over, year after year. Those sacrifices were only a temporary fix to an ongoing problem. The High priest was constantly on his feet in service for the needs of the people, and no doubt he was worn out at the end of the day. ..
