Stir It Up
I stood at the back of the auditorium and watched two thousand women wave pink plastic spoons in the air. They were about to stir it up.
College girls, grandmas, mommas, over-dressed divas, and some tee-shirt warriors stood together waving their spoons. But all those spoons and that stirring came without a single serving of ice cream.
The fiery speaker had just dropped a strong truth and a big challenge into the women’s gathering. She confidently stated that everyone present was born with a gift given uniquely by the God of the universe. Further, she stated that we want and wait for the glory of God in our lives. Then she revealed the secret formula to receive it.
The pink spoon in our hand reminded us that we must first stir up the gift God has given us. We must use what God has gifted us with for His kingdom, and then we will receive His glory.
Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
~2 Timothy 1:6-7 NKJV
We want blessings, pray for God’s glory to come upon us, and long to feel His favor, but the truth of her message was clear. Only hoping and praying for those things will never cut it. Too often, we sit on our hands when we need to actively stir up God’s gift.
If our gift is writing, we should get the keyboard buzzing. If our gift is singing, we might join the worship team. And if our gift is hospitality, we can invite others to dinner. Why, then, are we so hesitant to stir up our gift?
Even before we were born, God planned in advance our destiny and the good works we would do to fulfill it!
Ephesians 2:10 TPT
My gift was my biggest dream for years, but it didn’t seem doable, so I didn’t try. I wanted it and longed to work that way, but the enormity of a direction I knew little about intimidated me. But at the time, I had no idea that our gift could also be our biggest dream.
When we embrace our purpose, we will live with and in the glory of God. His favor blesses our way. We can stop living in dismal dread of another mediocre day, hoping and wishing for more.
Instead, we can find the gift God has placed in us and then stir it up with all our might. As we continue to stir, we will savor the sweet spot we’ll find in Him.
So, grab a plastic pink spoon from the party aisle at Walmart. (Male readers: blue and green are also available.) Then, put one of those spoons in your pocket or purse as a reminder. Maybe you want another one in your car or on your desk. And, of course, one needs to go in the kitchen next to the ice cream. Or, pick up your pen, a microphone, the cake server, or whatever else God has called you to and start stirring up your gift. We’ve all got some stirring to do.
Think of ways to stir up your God-given gifts.
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for trusting me with a purpose in Your kingdom. Help me to stay worthy of Your plan for me. May I consistently and continually stir up the gift You’ve given me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
