After they listened to the king, they went out, and behold, the star which they had seen at its rising led them until it come and stood above the place where the child was. Guided by the star, the ship’s captain made it safely through the passageway of the Great Bering Straight. Henceforth, His safe passage was successful because of a sign from God.

The year was 1783, and with forty years of sailing, the sea captain had made the trip more times than he could remember. However, he made sure of one thing before attempting the Great Bering Straight at night. He never attempted such a treacherous feat without the guidance of the North Star, which guided him safely in the dark, dangerous sea.

Many of us have gazed at the stars under a country sky and pondered the stars’ beauty as their light glimmered against the darkness of space. When I see the stars, they always give me hope and reassurance as they shine brightly in the night sky, just as the North Star assured and guided the sea captain. God has also chosen to use other parts of His creation to guide people on their journey.

And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them along the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, that they may travel by day and by night.

What signs has God given you that reassured and encouraged your walk with Him?

Heavenly Father, thank you for giving me signs of guidance and assurance in this treacherous world. Your ways keep me safe as I walk daily with You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
