Seeking God First
Seek the Lord and His strength; seek His face always.
~Psalm 105:4 CSB
The assassination of Charlie Kirk devastated me. I didn’t know him personally or follow his podcast. My knowledge came through watching reels and clips of him debating students on campuses across the nation. He was a man seeking God first.
The Murder
Charlie’s faith was the most important thing to him. He was a bold Christ follower, and I admired his witness. My heart ached as if for a close friend, and I couldn’t understand why I was so directly affected. After much prayer and introspection, I gained a better understanding of my reaction.
The Spirit Himself testifies together with our spirit that we are God’s children.
~Romans 8:16 CSB
First, Christians connect through the Holy Spirit that lives within us. I felt the agony of this murder in my spirit because other believers shared the same pain. At times, I forget the great power that lives within me and equips me each day. The same power in me is in other believers, and together we mourned Charlie’s murder. The Holy Spirit makes us one.
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this darkness, against evil, spiritual forces in the heavens.
~Ephesians 6:12 CSB
Second, my spirit discerned this as a demonic attack. People celebrating the murder of anyone is the epitome of evil. Their brazen cheering of Charlie’s death in front of his wife and children reeked of a person blinded by evil. I wanted to shout, “Wake up! Come out of your delusion.” Sadly, many may never recognize the hand of evil steering their lives. My heart aches for them. The more that evil abounds, the more I must share Jesus as Charlie did.
Therefore, come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord; do not touch any unclean thing, and I will welcome you.
~2 Corinthians 6:17 CSB
Third, I found myself so overwhelmed that I had to back away from social media. Every time I scrolled on my phone, my feed was full of stories about his murder, followed by people either sad or celebrating. Since I watched the clip of his actual murder, I can never unsee that image. I believe there is a point where I can see too much.
The Miracle
Murder in real time and close-up is too much for me. Therefore, the decision to distance myself online stemmed from realizing where my focus needs to be at all times. Knowing and seeing what everyone thinks and feels is not important. Freeing up more of my time for God is good for my soul. Feasting on God’s Word and His presence is true peace.
You will seek Me and find Me when you search for me with all your heart.
~Jeremiah 29:13 CSB
The interconnection with fellow believers through the Holy Spirit, my discernment of the demonic attack, and the influence of media on my life all directed me to a deeper walk with the Lord. Time spent seeking the world changed to time spent seeking God. Although I am saddened by the event that led to my introspection, I am grateful to God for using it to draw my attention. He promises “all things work together for the good of those who love God, who are called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28 CSB).
We can thank God for working His good out of this tragedy for so many believers around the world.
Where are you spending your time? Think of ways to free up more of your time to seek God first.
Father, forgive me for giving more attention to the world than to listening and learning from You. Additionally, please bless my time in Your presence, that I may grow into the person You desire. Thank You for meeting with me. Amen.
