Revelation for Our Blind Spots
Our salvation includes a transfer from living by the rules and wisdom of the fallen world to obeying the principles and promises of God’s Kingdom. The transfer is instant, but full comprehension dawns gradually as the Holy Spirit gives us revelation for our blind spots.
Consider an encouraging example from the day right after Jesus’ resurrection. The story takes place on the road to Emmaus when Jesus overhears a sad, discouraged conversation between two of His followers. The men only see a stranger when He asks them what they were discussing. Surprised at the stranger’s ignorance, they explained how the man they hoped was the Messiah had been crucified rather than defeating the Romans and restoring glory to Israel.
Jesus shocked them when He called them “foolish ones and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken” (Luke 24:25 NKJV)! Beginning with Moses and the Prophets, He explained everything the Scriptures said about Him.
I can imagine them hanging on every word, perhaps wondering how Jesus knew all this. The day was ending, so they asked this stranger to stay for a meal and spend the night with them. But after Jesus broke the bread, a strange thing happened.
Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him.
~Luke 24:31 NKJV
Before we judge these men, let’s remember 1 Corinthians 1:18, which says “The message of the cross is foolishness” to those who don’t know the Lord. These men were disciples. They’d been with Jesus in the flesh and likely knew the Torah. Jesus had even shared with some that He would suffer at the hands of the rulers, experience death, and rise again. But their worldly views blinded them. Sometimes, they do us also.
Because of our fall into sin, we can’t understand spiritual truth without supernatural help. Salvation in Christ restores our connection to God, but it takes time to renew our minds. Until God heals all our blind spots, we can resemble those two followers who walked beside Jesus without seeing who He was.
God was gracious to make the point again with the disciples in Jerusalem who didn’t understand any better. Jesus had to convince them repeatedly that He was alive and not a ghost.
After receiving salvation through the cross, we must work to learn and understand the mysteries of the gospel. Jesus knew this when He shared with the disciples in the Upper Room.
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I have said to you.
~John 14:26 NKJV
Don’t labor blindly to figure things out when you can ask the Helper for the revelation you need.
Dear Father, thank You for anticipating all my circumstances. Thank You for sending me help to understand how Your Word and ways apply. Remind me of the things I’ve read and been taught at the time I need them. And show me how to pray. In Jesus’ victorious name, amen.
