Rejoice in the Lord Always
“Rejoice in the Lord always” may seem like another tired and overdone Christian cliché, fit for embroidered pillows, bookmarks, and coffee mugs. But sometimes it’s good to stop and reexamine these commonly heard phrases, especially when the Bible repeats them.
In the Amplified translation of this verse from Philippians, we get a peek into the deeper meaning of the passage.
Rejoice in the Lord always [delight, take pleasure in Him]; again I will say, rejoice!
~Philippians 4:4 AMP
Delight and take pleasure in Him. What an awesome God we have a relationship with. He invites us to be close enough to Him to delight and take pleasure in His company. Again, rejoice in Him! (I love it when there are exclamation points in the Bible text.)
The word “always” in the verse made me stop and selah (pause and reflect). In good and bad times, I should rejoice and delight in God. I am to rejoice during my struggles, not just when I am delivered from them.
Additionally, the story of Paul and Silas in Acts sixteen illustrates this notion of rejoicing always, no matter the circumstances.
They were put in the inside room of the prison, and their feet were put in pieces of wood that held them. About midnight, Paul and Silas were praying and singing songs of thanks to God. The other men in prison were listening to them. All at once, the earth started to shake. The stones under the prison shook, and the doors opened. The chains fell off everyone.
~Acts 16:24-26 NLT
These two men of God were bound in prison chains, probably wounded from the beatings they received for teaching about salvation through Jesus Christ. My fiction writer’s mind imagines rats scurrying through the dark, dank chamber of death. The stench of festering flesh filled the air. But melodious hymns sung by men whose hearts are sold out for the Lord reverberate off the walls, producing a heavenly sound.
Instead of focusing on their untreated injuries and utter discomfort, Paul and Silas praised God, taking delight in Him in an undelightful situation until the whole place shook, doors opened, and everyone’s chains fell off. They praised God before He delivered them. Can you imagine? It was as if their prayers and praise caused an earthquake, and then their bondage fell away.
Are you struggling with a difficult situation that has stolen your focus? Instead, turn your eyes back to Jesus. Pray and praise Him through it.
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for Your word, where You teach me Your ways, which are always the best. Please help me adopt Your perspective in hard times and give me wisdom. In Jesus’s mighty name, amen.
