Refuge
Boom! My three grandchildren jumped up and ran inside, leaving me alone on the back porch swing. No discussion. No questions about whether they should go inside. The nearby lightning strike surprised us all, and they were gone before I could move. They knew their refuge, and they scrambled for it. Once inside, they felt safe.
The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous runs into it and is safe.
~Proverbs 18:10 NASB2020
My Refuge
Running inside behind my grandchildren made me think of times that I sought refuge in the Lord, my strong tower. I know that He provides safety and security. A strong tower reminds me of an impregnable fortress. Nothing can get to me unless it gets through my God, the tower. I can trust Him to guard me in His wisdom. In the tower, I can get above my problems to see the landscape more clearly through His eyes. The tower offers me rest and peace.
Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts before Him; God is a refuge for us.
~Psalm 62:8 NASB 2020
God’s Refuge
One way that I take refuge is by running to my tower through prayer. My daily communion with God in this way transports me to my strong tower, where I have peace in His hands. Therefore, I can rest, knowing His will is best for me. Whatever happens, He has provided for me now and forever. He meets with me in the praises from my heart, and I rejoice in His presence.
Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.
~Proverbs 30:5 NASB 2020
Another way that I run to my refuge is through reading and studying His word. There is power, light, and life in His Word. Through His Word, He created the world (John 1:1-3), provided salvation (John 3:16), lights my path (Psalm 119:105), and gives me sustenance (Matthew 4:4). Each encounter with His Word draws me closer into His presence and love.
I will praise you forever for what you have done, in the presence of your faithful people, I will put my hope in your name, for it is good.
~Psalm 52:9 CSB
I also run to my strong tower of refuge through fellowship with other believers. The kinship with other believers binds me closer in God’s love. Our common love for Him encourages our continued walk with God, individually and collectively. The connection is like getting an external boost for my journey.
Think of ways you can run to your strong tower of refuge this week.
Dear Lord, thank You for Your ever-present help. I can depend upon You, my strong tower. When troubles chase me and fear threatens my peace, help me to remember that You are my refuge. In Jesus’s name, amen.
