Putting on Christ
But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts.
~Romans 13:14 NASB
Once, I neglected putting on Christ during a call I made about an online return.
I was a little frustrated after talking with the representative. Okay, a lot frustrated. I didn’t yell or say bad words, but the guy wouldn’t have guessed I was a child of God by our conversation. A communication issue added to the problem. With my Southern brain, I could only understand about every third word. After repeated requests to talk with a supervisor, the agent finally set me up for a return call from the supervisor.
After hanging up, the Holy Spirit convicted me. I didn’t like me. I certainly didn’t represent the Lord well. Allowing my flesh to rule the conversation, I became like the world. Conviction filled my heart. After all, the guy was either a Christian or a non-Christian. He would not have encountered Christ while talking with me if he were a non-Christian. If he was a Christian, Christ was in him, and I talked to my Savior with less than stellar conversation.
Therefore we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us. We plead on Christ’s behalf, “Be reconciled to God.”
~2 Corinthians 5:20 NASB
Several minutes later, a supervisor called back. By this time, I had been thoroughly chastised by the Spirit and myself. I apologized. Although she had not been the recipient of my fleshly comments, I owned up to my deficit and asked forgiveness. God’s Spirit within me would not let me do otherwise.
The supervisor was gracious, and all was well. Through the experience, I understood how quickly the flesh can gain control. As it unfolded, I knew in my spirit I should temper my speech, but I didn’t stop. It felt good to stand up for my rights … temporarily.
But by ignoring the Spirit and not putting on Christ, I was left naked and ashamed. After repentance and asking for forgiveness from the Father and the representative, I put on Christ, hoping never to forget again.
Think of times when you forgot to put on Christ and allowed the flesh to rule. Then, thank God for forgiving you and reminding you to put on Christ.
Dear Lord, help me resist the pull of the flesh when I should be an ambassador for Christ. May others see only You in my life.
