Opening Day
And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
~Matthew 4:19 ESV
A nearby road remains relatively easy to travel for 364 days out of the year. However, on the opening day of trout season, it becomes lined with vehicles along the nearby, swift-moving stream. This stretch of highway impedes non-fishing drivers like me, causing us to slow down.
Anglers brave the cold weather and even colder water with rods, hip waders, and tackle boxes packed with lures and live bait. One can detect the successful early risers by the broad smiles on their faces and the stringer full of fresh trout as they walk proudly back to their vehicles.
Fishing was quite popular during Jesus’s time. And just like the people lined up along the road in my time, those fishing the Sea of Galilee did not always return with a net full of fish. Several times in Scripture, Jesus shows His power over creation by miraculously filling their nets. Even after His resurrection, we find Him preparing a beachside breakfast of fresh fish and bread.
Catching fish provides food and income for a family. But Jesus was more concerned about a longer-lasting provision when He challenged His disciples to become fishers of men. He called them to reel in new believers. That call is just as important today. Jesus calls us to line up and cast the precious gospel message to those passing by.
Think of ways you can make every day opening day to share God’s love.
Thank you, Lord, that every day is opening day to fish for new believers. Help me succeed as a spiritual angler, believing You cause the eternal increase. In Jesus’ name, amen.
