Not a Liar
The Accusation
“He said that I’m a liar.” My grandson’s eyes widened. “I’m not a liar!” he said, scuffing his foot across the grass. “What’s a liar?”
Hiding a smile, I bent and spoke into his little ear, “When we say things that are untrue, that is lying. Is what you said the truth, or did you make it up?”
“No, I didn’t make it up. It was true. He’s just being mean to me.”
“Well, if you were speaking the truth, then you are right. You’re not a liar.”
Linking hands, we walked down the path. “If you know it’s true, then does it matter what he says?”
Stopping, he cocked his head to the side. “No, but he’s still mean.” He shrugged his shoulders. “I’m not playing with him anymore.”
Spying a spectacular stick, he abandoned the conversation. I ruffled his hair and let it go. The teachable moment had passed.
The Truth
But had the moment passed for me? How many times had my behavior called God a liar?
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
~Romans 5:8 NIV
By my actions, I often dismiss God’s great love. In my head, I believe He loves me, yet I don’t live like it. Too often, I let worry rule over me. My loving Father has me, and He loves me. I can trust His hand in all things, seen and unseen. Therefore, I need to relax in His hands and feel secure in His great love.
“For I know the plans that I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans for prosperity and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”
~Jeremiah 29:11 NIV
Hmmm. If the maker of the universe has plans for my prosperity, who am I to live in defeat? Whenever I despair about what the future holds, I don’t live by faith. In fact, my life calls God a liar. My humanity leads me to rely on myself, but God calls for me to rely on Him.
Think of how you will respond when worry seeks to call God a liar.
Lord, help me to be mindful of Your great love and to live as if I believe it. May others see Your presence in my life as I rest in You. Help me to be open and available for You. Amen.
