No Light No Beauty
The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech . . . their words to the ends of the world.
~ Ps. 19:1-2a, 4b NIV
With no light, no beauty exists.
Recently, my heart eagerly waited to wake, grab my Bible and journal, and settle on my front porch. September’s cooler mornings bade me soak in the ever-changing sky before the sun appeared and shone its glorious light.
I find pleasure in each cloud’s shape. I love the long and wispy ones that dance in the atmosphere and the huge and billowy ones. These give weight to what is only gas, floating away with the wind’s direction.
A crow cawed, and another hoarsely answered. Mist rose from God’s creation, drawing and restoring rest to my soul. I watched shades of deep pink merge into orange, peach, gold, and then to white luminous brilliance.
Bathed in this movement, I glanced again. But where light had shone on a cloud, now it hovered without color, only grey in contrast to seconds before when the sun’s light touched its surface so richly.
The Light of God’s Word Is Beauty
Struck by this disappointment, I realized only light coming from the Father can brighten my life to give light, clarity, and definition. Oh, that I would grow in His light. His Word brings light to my eyes. His life brings life to my mind. And what beauty would I have without the light of the Creator of the earth and sky?
The unfolding of your words gives light.
~Ps. 119:130a NIV
The Light of God’s Word Changes Our Lives
Knowing God’s Word brings direction to our lives. It is a light to our path. When we long for His light of truth, we want to bathe ourselves and refresh our spirits regularly.
We should long to share this light with our friends so their lives also envelope God’s glory. Then they, too, can be transformed from lifeless to brimming over.
In what ways does God’s light change you?
God, beckon my soul, mind, and heart. Allow Your beauty to sanctify me wholly to You, permitting my rested spirit to know Your sanctuary of blessing. Cause Your light to strengthen me to share Your living word with others. Amen.
